Interview with Greg Scott

Interview with Boom! Studios artist, Greg Scott, regarding his work on the Jim Bowie-Jean Lafitte comic book series titled Galveston.
AS: Tell us a few things about yourself.
GS: I’m a professional comics artist, I’m a single parent, I have a beautiful 3 year old daughter, Julia–We live in New York City–I’m told I watch too many movies–all in all, life is good, no complaints here.
AS: How long have you been working in the comic book industry? What titles have you recently worked on?
GS: About 8 years full time, I’ve never done a series–recently I’ve done X-isle for Boom! Studios, a Newuniversal one shot for Marvel- an arc on Gotham Central, I’ve worked for Blizzard Entertainment (Warcraft) and a lot of movie design work–lets see–oh yeah Sword of Dracula, which I co-own with Jason Henderson and Ed Dukeshire–(I’m currently working on a mini in my spare time–whats that?)–
AS: “Galveston” is your latest project. A six issue mini-series that follows the adventures of Jim Bowie and pirate, Jean Lafitte. What can you tell us regarding the story? What exactly brings these two famous figures together?

GS: Well, it’s a kind of Butch and Sundance kind of thing–although, at the point in the story I’m drawing now, theres not a lot of love between them.
AS: Putting together a comic book series is tedious, yet rewarding in so many ways. For those unfamiliar, describe the process of bringing a story such as “Galveston” to life!
GS: My process? Hmmmm…I get the plot, figure out what I like/want to draw, start there–do my research, my little layouts that are desipherable only to me, drink too much coffee, and somehow at the end of the day theres a finished comic page on my drawing board–usually theres 2, actually.
AS: When were you first approached to draw the series? What attracted you to the project?
GS: Basically Mark Waid (Publisher & Editor of Boom! Studios) asked me what I’d like to draw, and I said, either a western or a pirate story, so he gave me both.
AS: What references did you use in creating the famous characters and settings for “Galveston”?
GS: Google Image Search.
AS: How is it to work with “Galveston” writers, Tom Peyer and Mark Rahner? After reading the Newsarama.com interview, they seem like pretty down to earth guys.
GS: Man, I’m loving the story!! It’s fun, poignant, and will definitely keep the reader interested–and yes, It’s great to work with guys you get along with, no ego, everybody just wants a great comic to come out as the end product.
AS: Starting this October, readers may pick up the first issue of “Galveston”. I assume the other issues will follow monthly?
GS: That I dont know….
AS: As for upcoming projects, what do you have planned?
GS: Currently, I’m drawing a Dominic Fortune 6-parter for Marvel, written by Dean Motter, more Sword of Dracula, and projects for both Marvel and D.C. that I can’t talk about yet…and more pirate stories for Boom!
AS: And finally, as an artist, what have you found so enjoyable in “Galveston”?
GS: The opportunity to draw a cool, fun story–I’ll work with the folks at Boom as long as they’ll have me!
